Slow Down: National day of action against speeding comes to Kilkenny’s roads

By COLIN BARTLEY

KILKENNY gardai will be out in force on roads around the county from now, until 7am tomorrow, as part of a national speed enforcement operation.

National Slow Down Day, a Garda initiative supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), aims to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding.

The objective of the National Slow Down Day is to increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed. Gardai hope this will reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. Excessive and inappropriate speed is a contributory factor in approximately 33% of fatal road traffic collisions.

Launching the operation, Chief Superintendent Paul Cleary of the Roads Policing Bureau said: “This is the second Slow Down day of 2019 and it could not come at a more appropriate time. Road deaths are significantly higher than this period last year.

“With the darker, wetter weather approaching, vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists will be at higher risk over the coming months.”

The operation will consist of high visibility speed enforcement in over 1,000 speed enforcement zones.
