‘For the first time in a long time I see a chink of light, a glimmer of hope’ – Kilkenny’s Green TD urges party members to back coalition deal
Local Green TD Malcolm Noonan has made an impassioned plea for party members to vote in favour of the new Programme for Government with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Deputy Noonan wrote a post urging support for the new ‘green deal’ as he “walked in the woods of Windgap” over the weekend.
He said he has spent the past 30 years “campaigning, lobbying, fighting, advocating, collaborating, demonstrating … all for climate resilience, for nature and for social, economic and ecological justice”.
The Kilkenny TD added: “For the first time in a long time I see a chink of light, a glimmer of hope. I see the Programme for Government as a distillation of much (but not all) of what we’ve been shouting for on the opposite side of the barricades for so long.
“I remember the promise I made to young climate strikers outside our town hall as I left a council meeting on a wet Friday in January. I promised that I would try.
“So it makes me sad that we have to now fight to do the job we are tasked to do and have been asked to do by all who entrusted us with a vote.”
Deputy Noonan urged his fellow party members “to be courageous”, adding: “It’s going to be bloody hard and we will stumble but we must at least try to turn things around. Please vote ‘Yes’ for the Programme for Government, for our shared future.”
He concluded by quoting the dissident philosopher and political activist Rudolf Bahro: “When the forms of an old culture are dying, the new culture is created by a few people who are not afraid to be insecure.”
