A further three pass away as number of health worker infections branded a ‘scandal’
A further three people lost their lives from Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland in the last 24 hours, the HSE said this evening.
The total death toll here is now 1,720 while the number of confirmed cases has now reached 25,391 after another 10 were diagnosed.
Meanwhile, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has branded the infections rate of health workers here as a “scandal”.
The INMO’s Phil Ní Sheaghdha told an Oireachtas committee that 88% of infected healthcare workers picked up the virus at work and that 60% of those infected are still ill.
This adds up to a total of 4,823 staff, according to data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, which INMO presented to the Special Committee on Covid-19 Response.
Healthcare workers make up a third of all Covid-19 positive cases, while seven healthcare workers have died.
Fianna Fáil health spokesperson Stephen Donnelly said it seems “public expressions of support not always matched where it matters for nurses and midwives.”
He said “that is an absolute disgrace in anybody’s book” and added: “Ireland as an island on the edge of Europe with an advanced healthcare system that had more time to prepare than most European countries.
He asked “Why did we have such a high infection rate? Was enough done to protect your members?”
