Plans for major overhaul of well-known county Kilkenny store edge closer

Plans to redevelop a large county Kilkenny agri-store are firmly back on track.

Earlier this year the Callan Co-operative Agricultural and Dairy Society Limited requested permission from Kilkenny County County to redevelop its facility on West Street in Callan.

The massive overhaul included the building of new retail space, new stores, new car parking facilities, new entrances, new loading areas, alterations to the yard and external walls.

The plans also involve the demolition of some silos and loading bays, while some entrances would be demolished to make way for the redevelopment.

In July the local authority requested some more information on five aspects of the plans: a flood risk assessment; further details on the proposed retail space; further details on the proposed car parking areas; more details on what the Co-op will be storing on the site; and more details on plans for a protected structure within the site, the old chimney.

The company has since reverted to the council with a detailed 85-page document, including a flood risk assessment and responses to all the council’s queries.

The local authority is expected to make a decision on the development by the end of this month.
