HSE removes round-the-clock inpatient care from hospital that treats Kilkenny’s elderly

Anger has been expressed after campaigners were informed that a local hospital with an excellent reputation for caring for many elderly Kilkenny will no longer be able to provide those services.

In a statement released by the HSE, they confirmed St Brigid’s would no longer be providing palliative, respite or step-down inpatient care and will in future be used as a “centre for chronic disease management (specialising in diabetes supports)”.

The statement read: “The HSE is to develop a new Community Healthcare Centre for chronic disease management, based at the St. Brigid’s Hospital building in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary

A range of other healthcare services will continue to be provided in and from the Primary Care Centre (also located onsite at the HSE’s complex on the Pill Rd. in the town), to serve local communities in Carrick-on-Suir and surrounding villages and parishes in counties Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford.

“As part of the new development, short-stay inpatient care is being discontinued at the St. Brigid’s District Hospital building,” the statement concluded.

Local Sinn Fein councillor David Dunne has vowed to fight on to reinstate the hospital services. Cllr Dunne said: “So I have a pain in my stomach since I got the news about St Bridget’s Hospital Carrick-on-Suir is no longer going to offer the following services – palliative care, respite or a step-down facility.

“Also, we are going to lose our hospice beds. What can we do? First off, we bring the protest to Dublin. We lobby harder than we have been. We don’t give up!” Cllr Dunne concluded.
