Have the conversation: Kilkenny people urged to consider organ donation in 2021
People in Kilkenny are being asked to have that difficult conversation with loved ones and consider becoming an organ donor as we head into 2021.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) and Organ Donation and Transplant Ireland (ODTI) are urging people to consider making donating an organ, which could save someone else’s life.
Around 500 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant in Ireland. This includes patients on dialysis awaiting kidney transplants and patients waiting for lung, heart and liver transplants
The HSE and ODTI are promoting public awareness of the importance of organ donation over the coming weeks. They are asking people to #HaveTheConversation and share their wishes on organ donation with their families and loved ones over the coming weeks and into the New Year.
A HSE spokesperson said: “While some kidney donations can take place through the living donation programme, all other organ donations can only proceed when another life is lost.
“It is really important we share are views and wishes on organ donation so that should our families ever have to make that difficult decision, they will at least know our views and our wishes and have the comfort of knowing they can honour ones wishes,” the spokesperson added.
