Checkpoints on Kilkenny roads and patrols of scenic spots as Operation Fanacht reboots for lockdown 3

Additional Garda checkpoints have been rolled out in Kilkenny today in support of the Government’s tigher new Covid Level 5 restrictions.

Motorists can expect to see an increased number of static checkpoints on the county’s primary and secondary routes, while mobile checkpoints will also be popping up around the county in the coming weeks.

These measures came into effect at 7am this morning as part of the reestablishment of  Operation Fanacht, an effort to curb travel during the latest lockdown.

As with previous rollouts of Operation Fanacht last year, 70 trainee gardai have been fast-tracked and sworn in as full-time members to swell Garda numbers for the operation. They will be supported by 60 Garda Reserve members.

The static checkpoints on the motorway system, which had been a feature of the previous lockdowns, are gone as gardai target travel on more local routes.

There will also be an increased number of garda patrols in popular tourist and scenic areas around Kilkenny.

Speaking about the operation, Deputy Commissioner John Twomey said: “We all have a role to play in tackling the pandemic.

“To date, there has been widespread compliance with public health advice and regulations. Now, more than ever, we all need to adhere to the public health advice. Stay home. Please only make essential journeys.

“This is a difficult time for people, particularly those who feel vulnerable or isolated. An Garda Síochána continues to be here to help.”

The Deputy Commissioner added that travel restrictions do not apply where people are subjected to domestic violence or are at risk of harm.
