IDA reignites battle with Kilkenny Council over port road

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has once again approached Kilkenny County Council in an effort to build a new road around an industrial estate near Belview Port.

The IDA lodged plans with the local authority looking to develop the L32314 road at Ballyvalla beside the State agency’s lands at Gorteen.

The road stretches along the boundary of the Glanbia Ingredients Plant. Several applications have been made to the council over the past two decades seeking to develop the road.

In its latest the application, the IDA is seeking to upgrade the L3412 to a Type 2 Single Carriageway Road for 758m west of the existing IDA Ireland roundabout.

They are also looking to construct a new roundabout at Ballyvalla cross providing access to IDA Ireland lands at Gorteens and Kilmurry.

A decision on whether the IDA get the go ahead for the plan is expected by the middle of February.

Glanbia had been seeking permission to build a European cheese manufacturing plant on a greenfield site in the area.

They were granted permission to build the complex by An Bord Pleanála. However, the plans recieved a setback late last year An Taisce was granted a judicial review of the decision.
