Snow down! Kilkenny drivers urged to take extra care amid new weather alerts

Kilkenny motorists are being urged to take extra care when on our roads for the rest of the week as heavy snows are forecast over the coming days.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) made the appeal after Met Éireann issued their latest Status Yellow snow and wind warnings, which come into effect at 8am.

Met Éireann warned of snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas (higher over the mountains) and strong gale force winds will bring rain, sleet and snow. The national forecaster said this will lead to poor visibility and hazardous conditions.

The RSA has urged road users to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on any essential journeys. They offered this advice for road users to cope with snow conditions:

• Remove all snow from your vehicle before commencing your journey;
• Clear windows and mirrors before you set out;
• Slow down and use all controls delicately;
• Leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front;
• Avoid over steering and harsh braking and harsh acceleration;
• Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin;
• Use dipped headlights at all times, and fog lights in heavy snow;
• Watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and allow extra space.

The RSA also advised pedestrians to wear high visibility clothing that does not restrict vision along with appropriate footwear.
