Plans for new 37 classroom school in Kilkenny lodged with council

A state-of-the-art building for one of Kilkenny’s largest schools is another step closer after plans for the project were lodged with the local authority.

The Board of Management of Kilkenny CBS has applied to Kilkenny County Council for permission to build a 37-classroom building at lands in Lousybush of the Dunningstown Road.

Funding for the huge project was approved in October of last year.

The part three-storey, part two-storey 37-classroom school building will have a total floor area of 10,564 sqm incorporating support teaching spaces, offices and meeting rooms.

The plans also include provision for a multi-use hall, library, staff rooms and all ancillary accommodation, including photovoltaic panels and green roofs.

Externally, the new school grounds will consist of the provision of six ball courts, outdoor seating and breakout areas, a sensory garden, and a covered tech yard.

The development will also include the construction of a new access roadway incorporating footpaths, cycleways, public lighting, and landscaping, that will tie into the proposed Loughmacask Link Road at its Dunningstown Road junction at Lousybush.

An internal drop-off and pick-up area for cars and an external set down for buses are planned, as well as 92 car parking spaces and 342 bicycle parking spaces.

Provision is made for the future development of a full-sized sports pitch, but does not form part of the current application.

Kilkenny CBS currently caters for more than 700 students and has 70 staff members.
