€60,000 to preserve two historic Kilkenny sites
Two archaeological heritage projects in Kilkenny are to share €60,000 funding announced under a new government initiative.
The Community Monuments Fund was announced by Kikenny TD and Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan to support the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites.
Two local projects are among 139 across the country who will share a €4.2 million fund that will enable conservation works on archaeological monuments deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support.
The two sites approved for funding in Kilkenny are the Abbey Quarter and St. Lactain’s Church.
Minister Noonan said: “This fund will support 139 projects all over Ireland to protect our archaeological heritage, make it more accessible and help to build resilience against extreme weather and the impacts of climate change.
“It is a massive support to the heritage sector, providing job opportunities across these projects for archaeologists, conservation architects, stone masons, and other professional trades.
“The quality of this year’s applications was particularly impressive, and I am delighted that we are able to meet the ambition of local communities across the country in protecting and caring for their heritage,” Minister Noonan (picured below) added.
