WEATHER FORECAST: Mild conditions in Kilkenny to take a frosty turn

The mild festive conditions were experienced in Kilkenny over the past week are set to take a rather frosty turn.

In its latest forecast, Met Éireann said today will start off brightly and “rather breezy”, but showery outbreaks of rain with some heavy falls “will slowly sink down over the northern half of the country through the day.”

The national forecaster added: “Further south, there will be a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees generally, but colder over Ulster with afternoon highs of 5 to 8 degrees. Mainly moderate southwest winds, veering northerly as the rain clears, increasing strong in western coastal areas later.”

Tomorrow will be a predominately dry day with some scattered showers, but these will mostly be in the northern and northwestern coastal areas. Met Éireann said: “Noticeably colder than recent days with highest temperatures of just 3 to 6 degrees but with good spells of sunshine and light to moderate northwesterly winds, but fresher on northern coasts.”

It will also be a cold, frosty start to Wednesday, but some good sunny spells will develop later on. Met Éireann added: “Light outbreaks of rain will affect parts of the southwest for a time in the morning but overall it will be a largely dry day with just some coastal showers. Highest afternoon temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in mostly light breezes. During the evening, cloud will thicken from the west with rain following behind, extending eastwards across the country overnight along with freshening southerly winds. The rain will be heavy in places with localised flooding possible. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees, coldest in the eastern half of the country early in the night.”

Met Éireann said Thursday will be a windy day with rain clearing eastwards through the morning, followed by “widespread blustery showers of rain, sleet and hail” and highest afternoon temperatures of just 3 to 7 degrees.

Current indications suggest the unsettled and breezy conditions will continue into Friday and Saturday, with rain and showers but with a drier and calmer day in store for Sunday.
