LATEST: ‘Great hope’ – significant drop in Covid hospital cases
A significant fall in the number of people with Covid-19 in hospital was confirmed today.
As of 8am, there were 940 patients with the virus, a reduction of 80 on the same time yesterday morning.
It is the first day in almost a week that the figure has dropped below the 1,000 mark.
As of 11.30am there are 89 people in intensive care with the virus, up six from yesterday.
The Department of Health also confirmed 14,555 new coronavirus cases, a significant drop in infectons on previous days.
Commenting on the latest figures, Health Service Executive chief Paul Reid said: “A consistent set of Covid-19 trends give great hope.”
In a tweet this morning, Paul Reid said hospital cases related to the virus are down and “fewer patients are on oxygen support”.
He also said referrals from GPs and the overall number of coronavirus cases are down.
Mr Reid added: “Booster vaccines and the public’s response have so far eased the worst impacts.” He also urged people to “please get your booster asap”.
