Man, 30s, arrested over murder of eight-year-old girl in New Ross

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of an eight-year-old girl in New Ross.

Gardaí today confirmed the suspect, who is aged in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of murder after he was released from hospital.

It comes after tragic Malikika Al Kattib died after an assault at a house in the Co. Wexford town late on Sunday night. The suspect and another woman were treated in hospital after the incident.

A post mortem examination on the little girl’s remains was carried out by State Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis yesterday. Gardaí this evening said the the autopsy results “will not be released for operational reasons”.

In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: “A male, aged in his 30s has been released from hospital and arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.”

Gardaí reiterated their appeal for anyone who may have any information about the fatal assault to come forward.
