Free high-speed broadband hub opens in Kilkenny

A TELECOM company has opened a new high-speed broadband hub in Kilkenny city, one of the three for the South East. The others are in Carlow and Wexford.

They are part of an initiative launched in 2017 by Vodafone and Siro, in a joint venture with the ESB. To date, 13 hubs have been established throughout the country.

 “This initiative is allowing people to work smarter, have a better work/life balance and pursue careers in towns and villages across Ireland, ” said Vodafone’s head of commercial activity, Treasea Doran.

The addition of free gigabit connectivity to these three hubs makes remote working an option for hundreds of people, according to Siro’s chief commercial officer, Ronan Whelan.

“It forms part of our rollout in the South East, with gigabit connectivity available to over 23,000 premises in the region to date,” he said.

Siro is investing €450 million in building Ireland’s first fibre-to-building broadband network, offering a 1GB internet connection to 500,000 premises in 50 regional towns.

The company has been partnering with co-working establishments on its new service.
