Famous Kilkenny War of Independence battle brought to life on 100th anniversary
Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of a remarkable War of Independence battle which took place in county Kilkenny.
The Bessborough Escape happened on April 23, 1921 when members of the West Kilkenny Flying Column were discovered by the Black and Tans near Piltown.
To mark the occasion, Kilkenny historian Eoin Swithin Walsh, author of ‘Kilkenny: In Times of Revolution 1900 -1923’ will describe the dramatic events of the day at an online seminar tomorow evening.
The talk will cover Kilkenny during the War of Independence and more specifically the remarkable story of the Bessborough Escape, which took place at what is now Kildalton College.
The Mooncoin academic will bring to life this extraordinary event in Kilkenny’s involvement in bringing about Irish Independence.
The event, which is being hosted on zoom, is being organised by Trasna Na Tiré, the online Irish History Museum based in Kells, county Kilkenny and takes place at 8pm tomorrow night.
