COVID-19 LATEST: Death toll rises by 38 as man charged with breaching travel restrictions
Thirty-eight more people have died after contracting Covid-19 as 657 more cases of the coronavirus were confirmed this evening.
It brings the overall Covid-19 death toll to 444.
A total of 12,547 people in the country have now contracted the virus after a further 411 older cases of Covid-19 were reported by a laboratory in Germany, the Department of Health said.
Meanwhile, a twenty-four-year old man has appeared in court in Wexford charged with breaching the restrictions on movement introduced to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
He’s the first person to be charged with offences under the new emergency legislation brought in by the Government last month (the Health Act 1947 as amended by the Health Act [preservation and protection and other emergency measures] 2020.)
Denis Constantin, who is originally from Romania but living at Shinguan, Mile House Road in Enniscorthy, faces two charges of being stopped by gardaí on two occasions over the Easter weekend more than two kilometres from his home – on Good Friday near Bunclody and on Easter Monday morning near New Ross in Co Wexford.
Mr Constantine is also charged with driving without a licence or insurance while disqualified.
In Gorey District Court today, Judge Brian O’Shea refused bail and remanded Mr Constantin to appear again in court next Tuesday.
