COVID-19 UPDATE: A further 11 pass away as WHO expert says we should think about opening schools
A further 11 people lost their lives from Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland in the last 24 hours, the HSE said this evening.
The total death toll here is now 1,572 while the number of confirmed cases has now reached 24,315 after another 64 were diagnosed.
Meanwhile, a World Health Organisation expert has said it is now time to think about reopening schools in this country.
Dr David Nabarro told Newstalk that keeping children home from school for too long can have long-term effects on their development, he told Newstalk Breakfast.
Áine Lynch, chief executive of the National Parents’ Council Primary, said the decision to keep schools closed until September was made at a time when public health conditions were worse than they are now and called on public health authorities to consider whether schools could open to sixth-class students, for example, in mid-June.
