Donkeys heading for new life after being rescued from county Kilkenny wasteland

Two abandoned donkeys rescued from wasteland in county Kilkenny this morning are being prepared for a new and happier life.

Gardaí from Kilkenny and Callan stations seized the two donkeys from a derelict site, unsuitable for the animals, located on the outskirts of Callan.

This planned rescue, taken with assistance from the Belline Donkey Sanctuary, My Lovely Horse Rescue, Kilkenny County Council and the Kilkenny Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was organised following an initial welfare check on the animals last Sunday.

A local Garda spokesperson said: “It is important to note that they have not been taken to the pound but instead this is the first day of their new lives as cherished creatures.

“Thanks to the assistance of our partners the donkeys it is hoped they will be fostered and adopted together after essential veterinary care and the services of a farrier.

“No owners are likely to come forward. Thank you to everyone who has prioritised these animals’ welfare over the past few days to get us to this point,” the spokesperson concluded.
