ELECTION 2024: ‘Make your vote count’ – Kilkenny voters have their say

After three weeks of intense campaigning by parties across the political spectrum, General Election day has finally arrived. And here in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency, a nail biting ballot will decide which five of the 20 local candidates will be returned to the 34th Dáil.

The exit of two sitting Dáil deputies – retiring Fine Gael TD John Paul Phelan and recently elected Sinn Féin MEP Kathleen Funchion – has added to the electoral intrigue in Carlow-Kilkenny, as has the emergence of high-profile candidates such as Fianna Fáil’s Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere and Patricia Stephenson of the Social Democrats.

Three sitting TDs – Fianna Fáil’s John McGuinness and Jennifer Murnane O’Connor and Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan (Green Party) – will also be battling to retain their seats.

Regardless of your political persuasion, citizens have been urged to say their say in the democratic process and to make your vote count.

According to An Coimisiun Toghchain (Electoral Commission), more than 3.6 million people are entitled to cast their ballot in today’s General Election.

Polling stations open at 7am this morning and will remain open until 10pm.
