General Election set for Saturday, February 8

The General Election has been set for Saturday, February 8.

The announcement was made this morning following a lengthy meeting between Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the members of his cabinet.

At the meeting, it was agreed to call an early election, which will also bring about a short campaign of just over three weeks.

The Taoiseach will now go to Áras an Uachtaráin where he will ask President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the 32nd Dáil.

The last time a general election was held in Ireland on a Saturday was the last time elections for the House of Commons were voted on here – Saturday, December 14, 1918.

The overwhelming success of Sinn Féin in that election saw the establishment of Dáil Éireann in April 1919.
