High Court rules €140m cheese plant in Kilkenny can proceed

An Taisce has failed in its bid to prevent a €140 million cheese processing plant being developed in county Kilkenny.

The decision not to uphold the independent environmental body’s objections on environmental grounds was reached in the High Court in Dublin in the last few minutes.

Both Kilkenny County Council and An Bord Pleanála had granted permission to Glanbia to build the huge facility in Belview Port in South Kilkenny, however late last year after failing to overturn the planning decision, An Taisce brought their case to the High Court.

This news will come as a huge relief to the farming community in Kilkenny and the South East region and to Glanbia International.

Despite the ruling today, An Taisce still have leave to bring the case to the European Court.

The ruling in the High Court has been welcomed by Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath who said: “I am glad and relieved.

“I am hopeful the resounding ‘No’ they received (An Taisce) will put an end to their reckless campaign against Irish Farmers,” Deputy McGrath concluded.
