Kilkenny Al-Fresco! Transformation of Market Yard is a big hit with public

Kilkenny’s Market Yard is looking blooming great as members of the public made the most of the city’s newsest urban space over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A whole section of the car park has been transformed into a new seating area, with many people taking the opportunity to sit back and bask in the new outdoor space.

The initiative by Kilkenny County Council was given a resounding thumbs up by members of the public – and local TD and Minister of State Malcolm Noonan.

The Green Party TD, who was recently appointed as Heritage Minister, said: “Having spent so many years campaigning for more of our urban space to be dedicated to people, cycling and walking; the transformation of what was car parking spaces at market yard and at Watergate is most welcome in Kilkenny.

“In the next few weeks I’ll be visiting Carlow to look at their plans for town centre regeneration and in early September I’ll be bringing together a national forum on town centres.”

He added: “Covid-19 is forcing us to rethink everything; radical action is required to co-create a shared vision for our urban centres. Well done to Kilkenny County Council for creating this vibrant public space.”
