Kilkenny road closed for weeks as 15-foot deep sink-hole is being repaired

A ROAD near Castlecomer could be closed for weeks while damage caused by a huge sink hole is repaired.

A section of  the N78 is believed to have collapsed into one of the old coal mines that run beneath it, leaving a hole more than four metres deep.

Local historian, Séamus Walsh, said he was not surprised. He told KCLR: “This is called the Collieries, and it was nicknamed that because there were so many pits in the area. It’s a hole of about 10 to 15 feet in the ground. It’s fairly dangerous but there’s tremendous work being done by the council so hopefully the road will be open inside the next three or four weeks.”
