One of Kilkenny’s biggest school unveils plans for new 24-classroom building

One of the largest schools in Kilkenny city has lodged plans for a brand new school building with Kilkenny County Council.

The Board of Management of St Canice’s Co-Educational National School on Grange Road is seeking to build a brand new 24-classroom school at its current location.

If approved, the development will consist of the phased demolition of the existing school and associated outbuildings and the construction of a new two-storey 24-classroom school with a total floor area of 4,334 sqm.

The new building will contain a general purpose hall, a single storey special needs unit, a library, staff rooms and all ancillary accommodation.

The plans also include new external senior and junior ball courts, play areas, a sensory play shed and garden and associated hard and soft landscaping throughout.

New vehicular and pedestrian access, including new entrances, gates and boundary on the Granges Road will be provided.

There will also be new drop-off and pick-up areas for cars and buses, as well as a shared footpath and cycle lane and 40 car parking spaces (including two disabled spaces) and 50 bicycle stands.

To allow for the phased construction of the new school, permission is also sought for 910 sqm of temporary accommodation.

The school currently caters for more than 650 students at their Bishopmeadows facility.

The local authroity is expected to decide on the application by the start of May.
