LATEST: 1,346 new cases of virus confirmed, expert warns most kids under-12 could catch Covid by spring
A further 1,346 more people have contracted the coronavirus, the Department of Health confirmed today.
The number of people currently being treated for the virus in hospital now stands at 315, up four since yesterday. Meanwhile, the number of people in ICU is 59, and increase of one.
Today’s figures were confirmed as health experts warned mask wearing and better ventilation is needed in our schools to combat further spread of the virus.
Infectious diseases consultant Dr Clíona Ní Cheallaigh said most children aged under 12 in Ireland could catch Covid-19 by spring.
She told RTE’s Brendan O’Connor Show that modelling in the US shows the Delta variant is highly transmissable and that the virus will continue to spread without mask wearing in primary schools.
