LATEST: Kilkenny again among counties with highest new cases of virus as three further deaths confirmed

A further three more people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 313 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 2,120. To date, there has been 75,507 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latest cases is as follow: 70 are in Dublin, 31 in Mayo, 21 in Kilkenny, 19 in Donegal, 18 in Laois with the remaining 154 cases are spread across 19 other counties.

The latest cases were confirmed after two primary schools in counties Laois and Mayo closed today for the Christmas holidays earlier amid concerns about the rate of Covid-19 transmission in the community.

The Holy Family Senior School in Portlaoise released a statement saying the Health Service Executive (HSE) is working with the school and has recognised “the need to close onsite”.

Meanwhile, Claremorris Boys National School in county Mayo told parents last night that it believed early closure was “right and necessary”.
