LATEST: No further deaths but 61 new cases of virus, Dáil recalled amid public backlash over ‘golfgate’
There has been no further coronavirus related deaths but 61 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It means the overall death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,777. There are now 27,969 cases of Covid-19 across the country.
No new infections were recorded in Kilkenny, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The latest cases come as the Government today confirmed it will recall the Dáil early, after the reopening of schools.
The Dáil was not scheduled to sit again until September 15.
However, in a joint statement from Taoiseach Micheál Martin of Fianna Fáil, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar of Fine Gael and Eamon Ryan of the Green Party, the party leaders said they had now agreed the Dáil should be recalled “following the reopening of schools”.
The Government had come under mounting pressure to restart the Dáil following the political storm over the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Clifden on Wednesday night which was attended by 81 people, including high ranking politicians and a Supreme Court judge, in breach of Covid-19 regulations.
