LATEST: PCR capacity ‘maxed out’ as 18,904 new cases of virus confirmed

A further 18,904 people have contracted Covid-19, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.

There are now 1,011 patients being treated in hospital for the virus, a drop of 44 on yesterday. Of these, 92 people are being treated in ICU, unchanged from yesterday.

The latest figures come as HSE vaccination lead Damien McCallion earlier said the country’s PCR capacity is “pretty close to maxed out” at 300,000 tests per week.

Meanwhile, antigen capacity has now grown to 600,000 tests per week.
