Restaurants and gastro pubs will be shut again from around lunch time on Christmas Eve under new plans to be put before Cabinet tomorrow.
And inter-county travel will be bannedagain from midnight 26 December, the Irish Independent reports this morning.
The newspaper also reports the ban on travel to and from Britain is expected to be extended to December 31.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan were briefed by Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan on the significant spike in new cases of Covid-19 yesterday.
Kilkenny accounted for 51 of the 727 new cases – the second highest number of infections recorded outside of Dublin
Dr Holahan described the latest figures as “gravely concerning”, adding: “The situation has deteriorated rapidly in recent days. A total of 3,837 cases have been notified in the past 7 days. The five day rolling average has increased from 339 on 17th December to 616 on 21st December, an 82% increase. It is now as important as it was back in March to limit your contacts and protect your loved ones.”
