Medieval marvel Kilkenny is Airbnb’s top trending destination in Europe

KILKENNY tourism received a major shot in the arm this week after the Marble City was named as Airbnb’s top trending destination for Irish holidaymakers and travellers this Summer.

Kilkenny came tops of a list that included some illustrious sun-kissed holiday destinations, including Dubrovnik (pictured below), the setting for much of the hugely popular Games of Throne series, Vienna and Naples.

Our medieval marvel was listed as the most popular location in Europe, recording the highest guest growth of 144%.

The Airbnb trending list is calculated by comparing year-on-year growth in guest arrivals for summer 2019 (spanning from June 1 to September 4) with those for summer 2018 (June 2 to September 5), with a minimum of 50 bookings.

The news is a further significant boost to Kilkenny’s tourism sector. Last month Kilkenny Castle was named as one of the world’s Top 10 Most Beautiful Castles.

Kilkenny is the only destination in the Republic to make the list of top trending destinations, although Belfast also made the grade. Other cities that made the list include Lisbon, Split, Krakow and Nerja.

Airbnb’s top trending destinations this Summer:

(1) Kilkenny (+144%)

(2) Naples, Italy (+114%)

(3) Vienna, Austria (+88%)

(4) Belfast (+87%)

(5) Split, Croatia (+81%)

(6) Lisbon Portugal (+65%)

(7) Dubrovnik, Croatia (+64%)

(8) Nerja, Spain (+62%)

(9) Krakow, Poland (+52%)
