Plans to transform landmark building in Kilkenny village approved despite objeciton

Plans to transform a historic building in a Kilkenny village can now go ahead after the national planning authority decided against an objection to the development.

Developers Walsh Sheehan Investments Limited can proceed with their plans to build six new residential units on the site on The Square in Johnstown, better known as The Ouncel pub.

Kilkenny County Council granted the developer permission back in November 2020, but an objection to that ruling was made to An Bord Pleanála back in December.

The developers sought to transform The Ouncel into four one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom, two-storey detached homes. Under thye plans part of the existing structure will be demolished and modifications will be made to the existing structure and the building’s façade.

In their decision, An Bord Pleanála said the development “would make a positive contribution to the regeneration of the town centre”.

It added: “It is considered the proposed development would not adversely affect the character and setting of the protected structure.

“The proposed development would, therefore, be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.”
