Special concert marks 50 years since state took ownership of Kilkenny Castle

This week marks a hugely significant milestone in the history of modern Kilkenny, a moment many say transformed to city into the vibrant, confident city we experience now.

Fifty years ago this week, the official handover of Kilkenny Castle into the ownership of the state took place.

The Office of Public Works is marking this hugely important anniversary with a celebration concert in the Castle’s Picture Gallery this coming Thursday.

Music on the night will be performed by uillean piper David Power, harpist Triona Marshall, violinist Patrick Rafter and Ellen Jansson on piano.

When the process of handing the castle over to the state started all the way back in 1967, the then 6th Marquis of Ormonde, James Arthur Butler, handed over the keys to the castle over to the city and the state in the presence of former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey and strangely – Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger.
