Supermarket giant has big plans for county Kilkenny store

A supermarket giant is looking to expand the size of one of its stores in county Kilkenny.

Aldi, the German discount food retailer has applied to Kilkenny County Council looking to expand its store on West Street in Callan.

The proposed development will consist of the construction of an extension to the existing single-storey building to include a new off-licence and floor space.

Under the plans, the store will increase from c. 1,453 sq m with a current net retail area of 990 sq m to 1,796 sq m, with a retail area of 1,316 sq m – a near 25% increase in size.

The development will include the creation of a new entrance lobby, a new canopy to replace the existing one, and the relocation of the trolley bay and bicycle stands. The car park will also be reconfigured to accommodate 20 more cars, up from 80.

A decision on Aldi’s plans for the store is expected by the end of April.
