WEATHER FORECAST: No Spring in our step yet as more rain, sleet and snow forecast for Kilkenny this week
Hopes the onset of March would herald a new Spring dawn have been dashed by Met Éireann as it forecast more wet, cold and unsettled conditions for the next week at least.
A relative calm returned to Kilkenny yesterday with the passing of Storm Jorge, but the miserable month we endured in February is likely to continue over next few days.
The national forecaster said today will begin very cold, with widespread frost and icy patches clearing during the morning.
Met Éireann said: “A bright day with sunny spells, but showers in the west of the country will become more widespread by afternoon. Some of the showers will be wintry with a risk of isolated thunderstorms and will turn to more prolonged rain, sleet and hill snow in northern parts during the evening. Blustery westerly winds and afternoon highs of just 5 to 7 degrees.”
The forecaster warned we will see frost most nights this week, although the east will escape the worst of the showers that are set to drench most parts of the west, parts of which are already suffering from severe flooding.
Tomorrow will begin mostly cloudy with patchy light rain quickly clearing from southern Munster through the morning.
Showers in the west will push inland and become more widespread through the afternoon, with temperature highs of 5 to 7 degrees.
The clouds will clear later in the night, allowing “a widespread frost to form”, according to Met Éireann, with temperatures falling to as low as -3 degrees, coldest in the east.
A mixture of sunshine and showers are forecast for Wednesday, although the rain will, again, fall mainly on the west coast.
The east will feel the icy brunt of the cold, however, with temperatures again dropping to -3 in places.
It will be largely dry early on Thursday, but there will be some patchy light rain or showers in the west and temperature highs of 6 to 8 degrees.
Met Éireann said Friday will be “mostly cloudy” with rain arriving from the west later, but it will get a bit warmer with temperatures climbing to 9 to 11 degrees.
The national forecaster said “current indications” suggest next weekend will be unsettled with further periods of rain and windy at times.
