WEATHER FORECAST: Wrap up well if you’re venturing outdoors in Kilkenny this week

It was almost too good to be true …

Met Éireann has warned the beautiful crisp autumnal weather and clear blue skies we enjoyed in Kilkenny over the weekend won’t be here for much longer.

The national forecaster said temperatures will plummet by as much as 14 degrees at times this week. And they have forecast a return of “heavy rain” as the week progresses.

Today will be filled with sunny spells an scattered showers with the mercury rising to as high as 18 degrees at times.

Met Éireann said: “Monday will begin damp in many areas as rain and drizzle continues to clear eastwards during the morning, though still lingering on eastern coastal counties into the early afternoon.

“Sunny spells and well scattered showers will follow. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate southerly breezes, veering westerly as the rain clears and easing through the day.”

However the mercury will drop to lows of just four degrees tonight – a 14C temperature downwards swing – as clear spells and isolated showers hit.

The forecaster said: “Mostly dry on Monday night with long clear spells and isolated showers, mainly in the west.

“Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees, coolest in the eastern half of the country, in light westerly breezes, backing southerly overnight. Mist and fog patches are likely to form towards dawn.”

Tomorrow will bring a mixed bag of sunny spells and scattered showers. Temperatures will hit highs of up to 15 degrees with rain moving in at the west later in the day.

Tuesday night is expected to be “wet and windy” as persistent rain hits the Atlantic coast and moves eastward across the country. Temperatures will drop to between 8 and 13 degrees with the coolest of the weather felt in Ulster and Leinster.

Met Éireann said the national outlook for the week is “mostly dry to start but becoming quite unsettled from midweek with heavy rain and strong winds at times.”

The forecaster added temperatures are expected to get cooler later in the week.
