LATEST: More details emerge about bizarre theft of 40 cattle from Kilkenny farm
Fresh details have emerged regarding the mysterious disappearance of a herd of cattle stolen from a farm in county Kilkenny.
Gardai are still hunting for a gang of rustlers who stole an entire herd of 40 calves from a farm in Jerpoint Hill outside Thomastown last week.
The gang made off with 26 Friesian calves and 14 Angus calves. Some of the Angus calves were heifers and bulls. All of the cattle were around six-months old, and all were tagged.
The owner only realised the whole herd had vanished early on Sunday morning when he went to check on his out-farm. The last time he checked his young herd was late the previous Saturday, November 2.
Gardai carried out house-to-house calls in the area to see if anyone had noticed anything suspicious or unusual during the previous week, but the incident remains shrouded in mystery.
The gardai believe the gang would have had to use an array of vehicles to ferry the animals away.
A local Garda spokesperson told KilkennyNow.ie: “We spoke to the farmer, he is very distressed. He believes it would have taken two or three trips with a jeep and a cattle trailer to get the calves across the field. Then they would have been transferred to a truck on the other side.
“We ask anyone with information, or anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious around Jerpoint Hill last week, to contact Thomastown Garda Station on 056 775 4150.”
