North Quays Development in Ferrybank a step closer as Government commits €12.6m to new city centre bridge
The North Quays Development in Ferrybank moved one step closer today following the announcement of €12.6m funding for a new bridge across the River Suir linking Waterford’s quays.
The announcement of the substantial funding was made by Waterford City and County Council who received the funding under the 2020 round of expenditure as part of the National Transport Authority’s (NTA’s) Sustainable Transport Measures Grant (STMG).
The €12.6m funding for the North Quays project will go towards the Dock Road and Abbey Road Access works and the Sustainable Transport Bridge across the River Suir.
The new bridge will create a direct link from Barronstrand Street through a new southern public plaza at the Clock Tower to the North Quays development and Ferrybank.
This 5-span bridge linking Waterford’s North and South Quays will be 207 metre long, 8 metre wide and designed to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and electric bus shuttle service.
The Mayor of the City and County of Waterford Cllr. John Pratt welcomes the funding announcement stating, “The funding represents a confidence in Waterford’s ability to realise our ambitious programme of developments which when realised will transform our City into a major urban centre of consequence and a driver for regional development”.
On top of the funding for the bridge, Waterford council received an additional €1,550,000 funding for the Bilberry to City Centre Greenway extension providing a continuous dedicated cycling and walking route from Dungarvan to New Ross, and a further €1,025,000 towards City Centre Sustainable Transport initiatives.
The tender process has already begun for the bridge and associated infrastructure works and it is hoped a contractor will be on-site before the end of the year.
