Plans unveiled for new strategic road in Kilkenny
A hugely important infrastructure project which will ease traffic congestion in parts of Kilkenny city is a step closer after an application for its construction was made to the national planning authority.
Plans for the 400mt road connecting the R693 Kilkenny to Freshford Road at Talbotsinch to the Dunningstown Road at Lousybush have been received by An Bord Pleanála.
The application has been made as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) – applications for planning permission directly to An Bord Pleanála for major infrastructure developments by local authorities.
Under the plans, it is hoped to construct a new roundabout at the junction of the Loughmacask Link Road and the Kilkenny to Freshford Road at Talbotsinch.
The council also hopes to widen and upgrade the existing access road for Talbot’s Gate and Talbot’s Court housing estates, for approximately 300m, while also creating a new section of road outside these entrances.
Footpaths and cycle tracks on both sides of the Loughmacask Link would also be provided under the plans.
The council also plans to close the Duningstown Road immediately on the city side of the Loughmacask Link Road, but will provide a new link to access the planned road.
The application is due to be decided by An Bord Pleanála by the end of September.
