EU will come to aid of local farmers in event of no-deal Brexit, vows Phil Hogan

IRELAND’S EU Commissioner, the former Kilkenny TD Phil Hogan, has vowed Europe will intervene to support Irish farmers “in the event of a no-deal Brexit”.

Mr Hogan (pictured below) said the support package will include “a mix of measures”, including private storage aid, withdrawal schemes and “adjustment aid”.

He added the full range of supports will be discussed during a meeting of the College of Commissioners tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Carlow-Kilkenny TD Pat Deering is chairing a special Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine meeting on the future of the crisis-hit beef sector this evening.

The hearings with representatives of the IFA, ICMSA, INHFA and An Tasice got underway at 3.30pm.

Deputy Deering called for all organisations and stakeholders to work together, adding: “We’ve had a lot of division over the last period of time between all sectors the only way forward in my opinion is these working together, so that the primary producer which is the farmer can have a sustainable future and have a decent income.”
