UPDATE: Kilkenny Castle playground will be closed for another eight weeks
THE playground at Kilkenny Castle Park will be closed until early June to allow for upgrading works, it has been confirmed.
Last week Kilkenny Castle announced it was forced to close the hugely popular facility due to “unforeseen health and safety issues”, adding the playground would be closed “until further notice”.
However, a spokesperson for the Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed the playground will be closed to the public for another eight weeks at least.
An OPW spokesperson said new equipment has been ordered, which will take six weeks to arrive on site.
Once it arrives it will take a week to assemble, and it will take another week to lay the new playground surface.
The spokesperson confirmed the new equipment will include a special needs roundabout and will generally be “more accessible for wheelchairs”.
The playground has provided to be a hugely popular facility since it opened almost 11 years ago.
Last year it received 104,000 visits from members of the public.
