Columnist: Olivia Goldrick Barefoot Yoga – Finding Balance During the Festive Season

As the year comes to a close, December often brings a whirlwind of activity. From Christmas gatherings to year-end work deadlines, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. At times, the joy and connection of the season can be overshadowed by stress, leaving little room for self-care. Here are some reflections and practical steps to help you find balance during this busy month.

Embrace the Power of Presence

This time of year, invites us to connect with loved ones, but it can also pull us in many directions at once. Yoga teaches us that presence is a gift. Whether you’re sharing a meal with family or decorating your home, try to bring mindfulness into each activity. Pause, take a deep breath, and fully engage in the moment. These small acts of awareness can make even the simplest traditions feel more meaningful.

Practice Seasonal Self-Care

Winter is a time for slowing down and turning inward, yet our schedules often speed up in December. Make space for self-care by incorporating gentle yoga or meditation into your daily routine. Even 10 minutes of mindful movement or deep breathing can help reset your energy and provide clarity. Try poses like Child’s Pose or Legs-Up-the-Wall to promote relaxation and restore balance.

Reflect and Reset

As we approach the end of the year, it’s natural to reflect on what has passed. Take some time to acknowledge your achievements, challenges, and growth. Journaling can be a helpful tool for this reflection. Ask yourself: What am I proud of this year? What lessons have I learned? What do I want to carry forward into the new year?

Set Intentions, Not Resolutions

Instead of setting rigid resolutions for January, consider setting intentions that align with your values. Intentions are more flexible and compassionate than resolutions, focusing on how you want to feel and live rather than specific outcomes. For example, instead of “I will exercise every day,” try “I will move my body in ways that feel good.”

The Gift of Presence

If you’re looking for meaningful gifts this year, consider giving the gift of wellness. A mindfulness journal or a yoga session voucher can be a beautiful way to share the benefits of self-care with others. Many communities offer yoga classes, workshops, or training programmes that can inspire someone’s wellness journey and support their growth.

Nurturing Balance in the New Year

As you think ahead to January, consider exploring opportunities to deepen your connection with yoga or mindfulness. Workshops focused on relaxation or goal setting can be a wonderful way to start the new year with clarity and purpose. Check local offerings or online resources to find something that resonates with you and fits into your schedule.

Closing Thoughts

This time of year, is a reminder of connection, gratitude, and renewal. By weaving mindfulness, self-care, and intention into your days, you can move through December with greater ease and joy. Remember, the best way to give to others is to ensure your own cup is full. Wishing you a peaceful and balanced end to the year.

Namaste,
Olivia
