Green light given for amalgamation of Kilkenny secondary schools

By COLIN BARTLEY

A NEW secondary school in Kilkenny, an amalgamation of two existing schools, will be ready to open its doors in 2022.

That is the expectation of the people behind the plans to amalgamate the two secondary schools in Callan.

A steering committee for the project was created this week, to begin the process which will ultimately bring about the amalgamation of the all-girls school St Brigid’s College, and the all-boys school, Coláiste Eamonn Rís.

The amalgamation had long been the dream of recently deceased and much-loved Principal of Coláiste Eamonn Rís, Br Damien Brennan, and just weeks after his passing, it looks like his dreams are coming to fruition.

The plan is for the new school to be up and running by September 2022.

There are currently 700 students enrolled between the two schools.
