Denis Hynes to be confirmed as Labour candidate to replace Cllr Maurice Shorthall in Castlecomer
DENIS Hynes will be formally selected as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Castlecomer local electoral area tonight.
Mr Hynes will be Labour’s sole candidate to run in the six seat ward in May’s local elections.
The popular Goresbridge politician and Siptu official will also be his party’s candidate for the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency in the next General Election.
As revealed by KilkennyNow.ie last month, Mr Hynes will replace the party’s poll-topping councillor Maurice Shortall, who is stepping down in May following 15 years of service on Kilkenny County Council.
Cllr Shortall, one of Kilkenny’s most popular and most effective local politicians, will nominate his party colleague tonight at 8pm at Castlecomer Community Hall. Labour Leader Brendan Howlin (pictured above with Mr Hynes) will also attend tonight’s selection convention.
Cllr Shortall was first elected in 2004 but has been a Labour member since 1981. He first stood for election back in 1999.
