Going back to her roots: Great granddaughter of Rose Kennedy to cut ribbon on longest bridge
The great grandchild of the person who Ireland’s longest bridge is named after, will be on hand to officially open the bridge tomorrow.
Rose Katherine Kennedy Townsend (36), is the great-grandchild of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, the mother of President John F Kennedy and Senator’s Robert and Edward, and the lady whom the bridge is being named after.
The 887mt long Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge is the focal point of the €290 million N25 New Ross by-pass and connects county Kilkenny with county Wexford at Pink Point. To mark the opening, Rose Katherine is being flown in for the official ceremony.
Rose Katherine is the grandchild of Ethel and Robert Kennedy – who was assassinated while on the Presidential campaign trail in Los Angeles in 1968. Rose Katherine’s mother Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is the eldest of Rose F. Kennedy’s grandchildren.
The new bridge is a stone’s throw from Dunganstown the ancestral homestead of President John F Kennedy and the eight other siblings of the famed Kennedy family with the bridge named after their mother Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Rose Katherine is a passionate advocate for information equity and has devoted her career to open data, government transparency, and improving technical capacity in the social sector. She currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for data.org, dedicated to building the field of data science for social impact.
Through her organization Open Data Collaboratives, Rose Katherine has worked on data transparency with governments and civil society in Africa and the Middle East. She served in the US Department of State and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) under President Obama’s innovation and transparency initiative, building technology and collaboration in US foreign policy. Katherine is a graduate of Georgetown and Harvard University.
During her visit to Ireland, Rose will meet with her Irish cousins and also visit the Kennedy family, the JFK Arboretum, the Dunbrody Famine Ship and Emigrant Flame in New Ross Town.
An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will join Rose Katherine Kennedy Townsend to perform the official opening ceremony of the New Ross Bypass and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge tomorrow afternoon. The road and bridge will be open to traffic at noon on Thursday.
