Baby in hospital after mother gives birth on city street

A woman and her new born baby are recovering in hospital after the mother gave birth on a freezing city street early on Monday morning.

The “vulnerable” woman went into labour on the corner of Linenhall Street and North King Street in Dublin 7 at around 1am yesterday when temperatures in the area were -1C.

Gardaí say while there was no criminal aspect to the incident it was very  distressing as the Finglas mum carried her child for 1km before an ambulance, which had been called by worried onlookers, met her at the Four Courts.

“It’s an absolute travesty that she had to give birth on the side of a road,” Cllr Christy Burke told the Irish Independent.

“It’s just unthinkable that we have come to this.

“Regardless of the circumstances, I’m sure this very distressing incident will prove that the Government needs to take drastic action into caring for those that need the most help.

“Thank God members of the public came to this woman’s aid and that she’s now being taken care of.”
