Grave destroyed by vandals in county Kilkenny town

A headstone of a grave was knocked clean off its bases after an attack by vandals at a graveyard in a county Kilkenny town.

And it’s not the first time this year graves have been targetted by vandals in Callan.

In the latest incident, a grave in Newtown cemetery in Callan was attacked between 1am and 2.30am on Saturday, December 21.

The vandals destroyed the headstone by knocking it clean off the grave.

Earlier this summer an old graveyard had to be closed temporarily following numerous incidents of vandalism, where many old gravestones were damaged.

Seven old graves on the grounds of the historic St Mary’s Graveyard in Callan were damaged between late June and early July.
