Heartless thieves targeting vulnerable pensioners outside post offices

By COLIN BARTLEY

PENSIONERS are being asked to be very aware of unfamiliar people when leaving banks or post offices after a number of incidents in the area recently.

Garda believe people may be targeting pensioners and following them after they collect their pensions or withdraw money.

Local gardai are investigating two near identical incidents in the area that occurred last week. The first incident happened at a shopping centre in Kilkenny, while a second almost identical incident happened in Tullow, county Carlow.

During both thefts, a pensioner who had just collected their pension at a local post office was targeted. The pensioner was then confused by a woman looking for both directions and change at the same time. The thief then followed both pensioners to their car and somehow managed to steal their wallets.

It was only later the pensioners discovered their wallet, which contained their pension, had been taken.

A garda spokesperson said: “This has happened a few times over the last couple of years,so were asking people to be vigilant when collecting their pensions.”

Gardai are asking anyone with information to contact them at Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000.
