Kilkenny nursery school grows its way to €1,000 prize

A SCHOOL in Co Kilkenny has been awarded €1,000 from a fund established by the GIY (Grow it Yourself) movement.

Kilmacow Montessori School are the lucky winners. They received the award for their work in educating pre-school children on the importance of good food and healthy eating.

A spokesperson for Waterford-based GIY said the school “aimed to educate pre-school children on the importance of growing and looking after your own crops and taking great pleasure is presenting foods that are hand grown from an organic garden in school to your own table. This is supported by lots of colourful pictures of different foods, to provide visual learning as well as hands-on experience and learning through play and social interaction with other children.”

GIY established the €75,000 Get Ireland Growing fund in association with Energia. Funding has gone to to 86 community food-growing projects

The top prize of €5,000 was won by The Zero Waste Community Garden in Kildare, a community project dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables in a sustainable and organic way .
