WARNING: Kilkenny residents targeted in new PPS phone scam
Residents in Kilkenny are among those who have fallen victim to yet another phone scam, this time targeting PPS numbers.
Local gardai confirmed they have received a number of complaints regarding bogus calls purporting to be from Department of Social Protection with an automated message stating that their PPS had been compromised.
There have also been cases where the recipient of the call has been informed it is “a Garda matter” and that they are investigating.
In both instances, the recipient is called and advised via a recorded message that An Garda Síochána is investigating them in relation to suspicious activity linked to their PPS number.
In order to rectify the situation, the recipient is then advised to press a number to speak to someone further in relation to the matter.
A local Garda spokesperson said: “These scam calls are mainly coming from numbers with the 087 prefix. Do not entertain these calls and do not engage as they are scams.
“Never divulge personal or financial information to unknown sources. Whilst the scammers may change their stories and methods, their goal is always the same – they want to access your sensitive information and get their hands on your money.
“If you believe you may have fallen victim to this scam, contact your financial institution and report the matter to local Gardaí,” the spokesperson added.
